Trump on Putin’s attitude and the possibility of an agreement

“I think he would like to return to a more normal life. He would like to trade with the United States instead of losing thousands of soldiers a week. They had a very strong impression that he would like to make a deal,” the U.S. president said.

Trump emphasized that the meeting in Moscow on December 2 was “quite good” and contributed to understanding the Russian leadership’s position on resolving the conflict. He also mentioned negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stressing that as early as February 2025, there were optimal conditions for reaching a peace agreement, but this opportunity was not taken advantage of.

Further diplomatic contacts and the Russian side’s reaction

The White House confirmed that on December 4, Steve Witkoff is scheduled to meet in Miami with the Secretary of the National Security Council of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, to discuss further steps in the peace process. The Ukrainian president also mentioned the preparation for this meeting in his evening address.

For his part, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov noted after the Moscow meeting that a compromise solution has not yet been found, but some ideas from the American side seem acceptable. At the same time, the spokesperson for the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, remarked that there were both accepted and rejected proposals during the negotiations, which he believes is a common practice in the process of seeking a compromise.
