Trump Advocated for Ending the War
In his social media posts, Trump stated that he expressed a similar position not only to Zelensky but also to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He emphasized the need to end the bloodshed and sign a peace agreement, stressing that property boundaries are shaped by war and courage. According to him, the parties should “stop where they are.”
“But I told him, just as I told President Putin, that it is time to stop the killings and make a deal! Enough blood has been shed, and property boundaries are defined by war and courage. They should stop where they are. Let both declare victory, let history decide! No more shooting, no more deaths, no more huge and irrational spending of money”
The meeting between Trump and Zelensky lasted over two hours. According to media reports, the Ukrainian delegation provided the American side with maps marking key vulnerable points of the Russian defense industry and military economy.
Context of the Negotiations and Reactions
The White House released a joint photo of Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky. The caption for the image noted that the purpose of the meeting is to save thousands of lives, and the parties aim to avoid further losses, financial expenditures, and achieve a mutually beneficial agreement with NATO.
Prior to this, Trump held phone negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and announced their upcoming meeting, which may take place in Hungary within two weeks. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov reported that during the nearly two-hour conversation, the main focus was on issues related to the war against Ukraine. According to Ushakov, Putin expressed interest in a political-diplomatic resolution of the conflict.
