Ukraine and Greece Agree on a New Gas Supply Route for the Heating Season

Ukraine has reached an agreement with Greece regarding the supply of natural gas, which will create an additional import route for the country’s fuel needs during the winter period. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of diversifying supplies to ensure energy security amid heightened threats from Russia.

Funding for Gas Imports and International Support

Zelensky noted that Ukraine already has agreements in place for financing gas imports. According to him, the government has allocated the necessary funds for fuel purchases and has received financial assistance from European partners, including European banks under the guarantees of the European Commission. Ukrainian banks and Norway have also joined in the support, and negotiations are ongoing with partners from the United States.

“We already have agreements on financing gas imports, and we will cover the need for nearly 2 billion euros for gas imports to compensate for the losses of Ukrainian production due to Russian strikes,” Zelensky said.

Response to Strikes on Energy Infrastructure

The need for additional volumes of imported gas has arisen against the backdrop of intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector, particularly on gas infrastructure. These assaults have significantly impacted domestic natural gas production, requiring the government to take prompt measures to ensure stable heating for the population during the cold period.

Experts estimate that due to infrastructure damage, Ukraine will need to import gas worth approximately 1.9 billion euros to compensate for the losses of its own production and guarantee uninterrupted fuel supply in winter.

The president emphasized that the country is actively working to expand its capacity to obtain gas from various sources, and the current agreement with Greece is an important step towards enhancing Ukraine’s energy resilience amid the war.
