Ukraine, European countries, and the United States have agreed to initiate a comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire starting May 12, which will last for at least 30 days. This agreement aims to facilitate a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and create conditions for finding pathways to peace.

Minimum Duration and Monitoring of the Ceasefire

This important agreement was announced during a press conference by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. According to him,

“We collectively demand this from Russia. We know that we have the support of the United States in this matter. An unconditional ceasefire means – without any conditions. Any attempt to impose conditions is a sign of an intention to prolong the war and disrupt diplomacy. The ceasefire must be comprehensive – in the air, at sea, and on land.”

Zelensky also emphasized that ensuring monitoring of the ceasefire regime is entirely possible in cooperation with the USA, and the 30-day period will create a real opportunity for diplomatic efforts. The official stressed that during this time, the main focus will be on defining the security, political, and humanitarian aspects of peace.

Reactions from World Leaders and Possible Sanctions

French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that while the USA will play the primary role in monitoring the ceasefire, all partners will be involved in the process. He stated, “In the event of a violation, we have agreed to impose extensive sanctions against Russia. This matter will be prepared and coordinated by the Americans and Europeans.”

If violations of the agreements occur, the international community is expected to impose extensive sanctions against Russia. In the event of a ceasefire violation, additional restrictive measures may be introduced, which would significantly impact Russia’s economic and political situation.
