Ukraine Open to Negotiations, but Russia Chooses to Continue the War

Україна готова до зустрічі на рівні лідерів із РФ, але Росія вкладається у подальшу війну

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Russia is showing a lack of willingness for peace negotiations and plans to continue the war against Ukraine, despite international calls for dialogue. During his evening address, Zelensky highlighted that the Russian side is only investing in further military actions, and all their signals indicate this.

“Two weeks ago in Washington, it was stated that at this time, the Russians should be ready for real negotiations – for a meeting at the leaders’ level. Ukraine is undoubtedly ready for this. But the only thing Russia is doing is investing in the ongoing war. All signals from them point to this,” Zelensky said in his evening address on August 31.

Position of World Leaders on the War in Ukraine

President Zelensky also noted that during his visit to China, Russian leader Vladimir Putin is likely to continue avoiding honest negotiations. He emphasized that most countries in the world, including China, India, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and others, are calling for a ceasefire and an end to the war. Zelensky particularly highlighted the support of the Pope and expressed gratitude for his principled stance. The President of Ukraine stressed that only Russia is interested in prolonging the conflict, and therefore the international community must continue to pressure it. He also expressed hope for an active stance from the U.S., Europe, and G20 countries, as the prolongation of the war only destabilizes the global situation, and Russia must be held accountable for this.

Role of the U.S. in Peace Initiatives

U.S. President Donald Trump stated this week his hope for a “very quick” end to the war between Russia and Ukraine, although he did not specify any timelines. Trump emphasized his readiness to impose economic sanctions against Russia if there is no desire for peace from the Kremlin, noting that this is about an “economic war,” not getting involved in a global conflict. The American leader also expressed his intention to initiate a personal meeting between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, highlighting his desire for the war to end as soon as possible.

In response to a journalist’s remark about Putin’s refusal to meet with Zelensky due to the alleged illegitimacy of the Ukrainian president, Trump stated that such claims are unfounded and are merely part of a political game. He also noted that the responsibility for the lack of progress in the peace process lies not only with Russia but also partially with Ukraine. According to Trump, sanctions and customs measures can be applied to both Russia and Ukraine.

Since taking office, Trump has emphasized the need for a swift end to the war between Russia and Ukraine. His administration focuses not so much on supporting Ukraine as on achieving a peace agreement and halting hostilities.

Recently, U.S. representatives have noted some progress in the peace process. Donald Trump has held meetings with both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, discussing possible ways to resolve the conflict.

However, Russia continues to avoid a personal meeting between the leaders of the two states and puts forward additional demands, complicating negotiations. Despite this, the White House emphasizes that both sides have already shown some willingness to compromise compared to their initial positions. Ukraine continues to insist on being provided with security guarantees as an important condition for ending the war.
