Discussion of Global Economic Challenges

According to a statement released by the Canadian Ministry of Finance on May 14, the meeting participants will focus on cooperation in addressing international economic issues. “Ministers and leaders will exchange views on current global challenges in finance and economics, as well as discuss ways to overcome them,” the statement reads.

Background and Economic Situation in Ukraine

At the end of April, it became known that Ukraine had not reached an agreement on the restructuring of its public debt. Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko emphasized the extensive losses caused by Russian aggression and noted that economic losses already amount to hundreds of billions of euros. According to him, infrastructure across the country has suffered significant damage, and the World Bank estimates that the costs of recovery could exceed 500 billion euros over the next ten years. Financial stability and debt sustainability are particularly important for the stable recovery of Ukraine.

As part of international financial support, Ukraine also received a positive signal from the International Monetary Fund. On March 28, the Fund’s Executive Board completed the seventh review of the extended funding mechanism for Ukraine and decided to allocate $0.4 billion to support the budget. The total amount of disbursements under this program will reach $10.1 billion, which is an important step towards stabilizing the country’s economic situation.
