Ukraine Condemns Politicization of Bilateral Relations
During the meeting, the Ukrainian side emphasized its categorical opposition to Hungary’s attempts to involve Ukraine in its own electoral campaign. The Foreign Ministry stressed that such actions harm the constructive relations between the two countries and may have negative consequences for further cooperation.
“The Hungarian side was urged to stop the aggressive anti-Ukrainian rhetoric to avoid negative consequences for relations between the two neighboring countries,” the statement said.
Dialogue on Euro-Integration and Hungary’s Reaction
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine assured its readiness for further constructive cooperation with Budapest. It was specifically noted that unblocking negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union serves the interests not only of Ukrainians but also of the Hungarian national minority residing in Ukraine.
Prior to this, the Hungarian Foreign Ministry summoned Ukrainian Ambassador Fedor Shandor, expressing outrage over the alleged influence of Kyiv on the election results in favor of the opposition party “Tysa.” Similar accusations were previously made by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who claimed that Ukraine was attempting to interfere in Hungary’s internal elections.
Prime Minister Orban maintains close contacts with the Kremlin and consistently criticizes European policy towards Russia, asserting that it has a “harsh” and “pro-war” character regarding Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Parliamentary elections in Hungary are scheduled for April. According to recent opinion polls, Orban’s party is no longer the undisputed favorite in the electoral race for the first time in a long time.
