Progress in negotiations and next steps
As Umerov noted, the parties made progress in aligning their positions and were able to significantly narrow the scope of unresolved issues. Following the negotiations, the Ukrainian delegation reported to President Volodymyr Zelensky about the current state of the negotiation process.
“During the meetings, we focused on issues of reliable security guarantees and the humanitarian track, particularly the exchange and return of our citizens. We have made progress in aligning positions and further narrowing the scope of unresolved issues,” he emphasized.
According to Umerov, detailed results and conclusions will be presented after the delegation returns to Ukraine. He also expressed gratitude to the United States for its consistent support and participation in the negotiations, hoping that the current dynamics will allow for a transition to a new phase of meetings.
Reactions and preliminary agreements
At the time of the conclusion of the negotiation round, there were no official comments from the White House. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the conclusion of two days of negotiations, noting that the American side is currently focused on the situation surrounding Iran; however, the end of Russia’s war against Ukraine also remains on the agenda.
Zelensky emphasized that Russia should not receive a “reward” for this war, and security guarantees for Ukraine and the EU must be sufficient to ensure lasting peace and prevent a recurrence of war in the future.
It is worth recalling that several rounds of trilateral negotiations involving Ukraine, the USA, and Russia took place in January and February, but detailed results were not disclosed. Meanwhile, after the meeting held on February 5, the parties reached an agreement on the exchange of prisoners of war — this was the first exchange in the last five months. A meeting scheduled for early March in Abu Dhabi was postponed due to the escalation of the situation in the Middle East.
