The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, expressed concern regarding US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 30% tariff on imports from the European Union. She emphasized that such a move could negatively impact the economies on both sides of the Atlantic.
Position of the European Commission on New Tariffs
“A 30% tariff on exports from the EU will harm businesses, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic.”
Von der Leyen noted that the European Union is committed to continuing negotiations to reach a compromise with the American side by August 1. At the same time, the EU is preparing to protect its own interests through proportional countermeasures if the new tariffs are indeed implemented.
Details of the New US Tariff Decision
US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 30% tariff on goods imported from the European Union and Mexico, starting August 1. Additionally, it was previously reported that a base tariff rate of 10% would apply to all imported goods, but for EU countries, this figure has been set at 20%.
These measures were announced on April 2, after which their implementation was temporarily suspended for a week until July 9 to conduct further negotiations with trading partners. Trump recently pushed the deadline for implementing the increased tariffs to August 1, leaving countries a few more weeks to find a common solution.
