Verkhovna Rada Dismisses Denys Shmyhal’s Government

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted on July 16 to dismiss the government led by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. A total of 261 members of parliament voted in favor of the resolution.

Ministers to Serve as Acting Officials Until New Government is Formed

Following the vote, all members of the Cabinet of Ministers will transition to the status of acting officials until the new government is approved. It is expected that on July 17, the parliament will consider and approve the new government composition.

Reasons for Dismissal and Next Steps

The draft resolution regarding the government’s dismissal, numbered 13485, was registered in parliament on July 16. The day before, Denys Shmyhal submitted an official resignation statement from his position as Prime Minister of Ukraine.

“This occurred after the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, proposed Svyrydenko to lead the government of Ukraine and to ‘significantly renew its work.’

Volodymyr Zelensky also suggested that Denys Shmyhal take charge of the Ministry of Defense, noting that Shmyhal’s ‘colossal experience’ could be valuable in this role.

Denys Shmyhal has served as Prime Minister of Ukraine since March 2020.
