Verkhovna Rada Extends Martial Law and Mobilization in Ukraine Until May 2026

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, during its session on January 14, supported a new extension of the martial law regime and general mobilization in the country. A total of 330 and 312 members of parliament voted for the respective bills.

Details of the Adopted Decisions

According to the adopted documents, martial law and general mobilization in Ukraine will continue for another 90 days, starting from February 3, 2026. This means that the special legal regime and the heightened readiness of the Armed Forces will remain in effect until early May 2026.

Preconditions and History of Extensions

The bills for the next extension of martial law and mobilization were submitted to the Verkhovna Rada on January 12 by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. Martial law and general mobilization were first introduced in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, in response to the full-scale invasion by Russia. Since then, the parliament has regularly voted every three months to extend these regimes, ensuring the sustainability of defense and the functioning of all state structures during wartime.

Martial law has been in effect in Ukraine since February 24, 2022, the day of the full-scale invasion by Russia. At that time, general mobilization was also announced. Since then, the Verkhovna Rada has been extending the terms of martial law and mobilization every three months.
