The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, arrived unexpectedly in Denmark on July 3, which has just begun its presidency of the European Council. The purpose of the visit is to hold talks with the leadership of the European Union regarding further support for Ukraine and its integration into the European community.
Discussion on Support for Ukraine’s Path to the EU
During the official opening ceremony of Denmark’s presidency in the EU, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen met with Volodymyr Zelensky. The discussions included European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. A key issue was Denmark’s role in strengthening support for Ukraine, particularly in the process of approaching EU membership.
“Ukraine belongs in the European Union. This is in the interest of both Denmark and Europe. Therefore, Denmark’s presidency in the EU will do everything possible to assist Ukraine on its path to EU membership,” quoted the Danish government from Frederiksen’s remarks.
Military Assistance and New Sanctions Against Russia
Among the main topics of discussion were the expansion of military support for Ukraine, cooperation between the defense sectors of the two countries, and the implementation of new sanctions against the Russian Federation. Additionally, during the visit, the President of Ukraine had an audience with the King of Denmark.
Zelensky’s visit comes amid statements from the U.S. about a partial suspension of arms supplies to Ukraine due to concerns over depleting its own military reserves. This decision was a surprise to Ukraine’s European partners.
Recent months have seen a significant increase in Russian air attacks on Ukrainian cities. Kyiv has repeatedly appealed to Western partners for increased supplies of air defense systems. At the NATO summit in The Hague held last week, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the possibility of providing Ukraine with additional Patriot systems.
