Windows Removed from the ‘Flying Saucer’ Building on Lybidska: Uncertainty Surrounds Restoration

Regulatory Authorities Have Abandoned Their Responsibilities

Windows have disappeared from the modernist building shaped like a ‘flying saucer’, located near the Lybidska metro station in Kyiv. This building is known as a scientific institute and is an important architectural landmark of the Ukrainian capital.

Lack of Transparency Regarding Repairs and Structural Condition

According to Kyiv researcher Olena Borysova, who reported the situation on social media, the removal of the windows occurred against the backdrop of the absence of a public repair or restoration project for this unique architectural structure. She emphasizes that it has been impossible to enter the ‘saucer’ for several years, so it is unclear in what condition the covering and the complex acoustic structure of the concert hall are.

“The windows have been removed. And we still haven’t seen a repair/restoration project,” she wrote.

A Place for a Museum and Cultural Value

Olena Borysova also noted that this building, which is one of the bright examples of Soviet modernism, could become a home for the Florian Yuriev Museum — one of the project’s authors.

Society is calling for a proactive stance from regulatory authorities and for the preservation of this unique building, which is part of Kyiv’s cultural heritage.
