Zelensky and Macron Align Positions on Security Guarantees for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron held talks in Paris ahead of the “coalition of the willing” leaders’ summit. This meeting is set to take place on September 4 in the French capital and will be crucial for further agreements on security guarantees for Ukraine.

Preparation for the Summit and Alignment of Positions

According to Volodymyr Zelensky, during the negotiations, the parties coordinated their positions regarding the upcoming coalition meeting and discussed preparations for providing Ukraine with robust security guarantees. The President emphasized that the outcome of their joint efforts should be the establishment of a reliable defense system for the country.

“We also talked about defense support for Ukraine: addressing current needs, strengthening sanctions against Russia, and opportunities for utilizing frozen Russian assets. Special attention was given to our movement towards the European Union. We appreciate France’s support on this issue,” Zelensky added.

Next Steps and Support from International Partners

During a briefing held in Paris, Emmanuel Macron expressed France’s readiness to provide political support for decisions that would contribute to ending the war and establishing peace. The French President also noted that partners are prepared to offer Ukraine security guarantees on the day a peace agreement is signed.

The summit of the “coalition of the willing” will focus on discussing security guarantees for Kyiv following a potential cessation of the Russian invasion. France and the United Kingdom are expected to chair the meeting. Some participants will join in person, while others will connect online. Following the conclusion of the meeting, a phone call is planned between European leaders and the President of Ukraine with U.S. President Donald Trump.
