Zelensky and Macron Discussed Ukraine’s Defense Needs and Strengthening Air Defense

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron held a bilateral meeting during the “coalition of the willing” summit on May 10. The meeting took place at the Gorodetsky House and marked an important step in aligning positions regarding further support for Ukraine in the security sphere.

Discussion of Defense and Sanction Measures

During the meeting, the parties thoroughly examined the implementation of the ceasefire decision, which is set to begin on May 12, and discussed Ukraine’s current defense needs and the strengthening of air defense (AD). According to the President’s Office, Zelensky and Macron paid special attention to enhancing cooperation in the defense industry and developing sanction measures against Russia in case of its refusal to adhere to the agreements.

Support for Ukraine’s European Integration

The issues of Ukraine’s membership in the European Union were also discussed. Zelensky emphasized the importance of France’s support regarding the necessary political decisions and the opening of the first negotiation clusters. Macron also posted a video on social media platform X, addressing his Ukrainian counterpart with the words: “Count on us, my friend”.

As part of the cooperation, a decision was made for a complete and unconditional ceasefire for a minimum of 30 days, starting from May 12.

High-ranking officials from France, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Germany arrived in Kyiv for the “coalition of the willing” meeting, including French President Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
