A new round of negotiations involving Ukraine, the USA, and Switzerland has concluded in Geneva, during which security and economic issues, as well as further steps towards resolving the war, were discussed. This was reported by the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov, who emphasized that the negotiations took place in both a bilateral format with the American delegation and in a trilateral composition.

Preparation for the Next Meeting and Key Topics
According to Umerov, the Ukrainian team is currently working on finalizing the parameters of security, economic solutions, and joint positions that will form the basis of new agreements. He stressed that the goal is to make the next trilateral meeting involving the USA and the Russian Federation “as substantive as possible.”
Particular attention during the negotiations was given to the economic block and long-term mechanisms for supporting Ukraine. Minister of Economy Oleksiy Sobolev, together with American partners, worked on a document concerning the reconstruction of Ukraine. The teams agreed to continue working on the details of this document, particularly regarding the reconstruction plan and investments.
Zelensky’s Position and Expectations for the Next Stage of Negotiations
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that he discussed the outcomes of the meetings with Rustem Umerov, Davyd Arakhamia, and representatives from the USA, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. According to him, there is currently a greater readiness for the next trilateral format of negotiations.
“Most likely, the next meeting will be in the Emirates, specifically in Abu Dhabi. We expect that the format will take place at the beginning of March. It is necessary to finalize everything that has been achieved for real security guarantees and prepare for a meeting at the leaders’ level. Such a format can resolve many issues. Ultimately, leaders decide key matters, and when it comes to Russia, in such a personalist regime, it is significantly more than in other countries,” the head of state stated.
Despite diplomatic efforts, Zelensky observed that there are no signs of the Russian Federation’s readiness for peace. He emphasized that Putin “is preparing to continue fighting,” and the international community must increase pressure on Russia to change this situation. Zelensky also noted that a true lasting peace is only possible with effective sanctions against Russian oil, energy resources, and the banking sector.
In January and February 2026, several rounds of trilateral meetings between Ukraine, the USA, and the Russian Federation took place, dedicated to ending the war. The specific results of most negotiations were not disclosed; however, after the meeting on February 5, the parties reached an agreement on the exchange of prisoners of war — the first time in the last five months.
U.S. Special Representative Donald Trump’s Steven Witkoff expressed hope for “good news” in the coming weeks in an interview with American media and did not rule out the possibility of a personal meeting between Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.
Before the start of negotiations in Geneva, the U.S. President urged Ukraine to “quickly come to the negotiating table,” and previously expressed the opinion that Russia might be ready to conclude an agreement amid the war. At the same time, analysts noted that the Kremlin continues to insist on maximalist demands, including Ukraine’s renunciation of the territories of Donbas, and rejects Western security guarantees.
Ukraine insists on receiving reliable security guarantees from the USA and European partners that should protect it from future manifestations of Russian aggression.
