Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his intention to have a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump in the near future. During a press conference in Copenhagen on September 3, alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the head of state emphasized the importance of new sanctions against Russia due to its unwillingness to cease the war.

Ukraine Insists on Legally Binding Security Guarantees
Zelensky highlighted that Ukraine has already signed about 30 documents regarding security guarantees with various countries, but this is not enough. In his opinion, the country needs legally binding guarantees that would protect Ukraine and European security regardless of changes in the leadership of partner states. The president noted that all existing agreements have different natures and help during wartime, but it is crucial for Ukraine to obtain more substantial guarantees for the future.
“We conveyed these signals to the President of the United States; he said a few weeks ago that he would provide some response, he mentioned that in a few weeks – which could be two or three weeks. We will be speaking with the President of the United States today or in the coming days to clarify this issue,” said Zelensky.
He also emphasized that no one trusts the Russian leader, and the issue of Ukraine’s territorial integrity is not up for discussion.
Security Agreements with International Partners
Ukraine has signed bilateral security agreements with many EU and NATO countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Denmark, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Latvia, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Iceland, Norway, Japan, the U.S., the EU, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Luxembourg, Romania, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia. The agreements were made within the framework of the declaration of support for Ukraine adopted in Vilnius by the G7 countries in July 2023. Most of these agreements provide support for Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU and NATO.
Zelensky recently stated Ukraine’s readiness for a leaders’ meeting with Russia but emphasized that Russia continues to invest resources in the war. In turn, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed hope for a “very quick” end to the war, although he did not specify exact timelines. He also stated his readiness to impose additional economic sanctions against Russia if Vladimir Putin does not show a willingness for peace.
Trump noted that he intends to organize a personal meeting between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, as he seeks to end the war. Since the beginning of his presidency, Trump has repeatedly emphasized the necessity of ending hostilities as soon as possible, focusing more on achieving a peace agreement than on supporting Ukraine. In recent weeks, there have been reports of some progress in the peace process in the U.S.; Trump has held meetings with both Putin and Zelensky.
However, Russia continues to avoid holding a personal meeting with Ukraine, putting forward new demands. Meanwhile, the White House emphasizes that both sides are already ready to make concessions compared to their initial positions. Ukraine continues to insist on receiving clear security guarantees from its partners.
