Shortly after this conversation, Volodymyr Zelensky further coordinated positions with European partners regarding subsequent actions to ensure stable peace.

Zelensky: Ukraine Needs Lasting Peace, Not Another Pause

“The positions are clear. We need to achieve real peace that will be lasting, not just another pause between Russian invasions. We must stop the killings as soon as possible, cease fire both on the battlefield and in the sky, and against our port infrastructure. We need to free all Ukrainian military and civilian prisoners and return the children abducted by Russia. Thousands of our people are still held captive, and they all need to come home. We must maintain pressure on Russia while aggression and occupation continue,” wrote Volodymyr Zelensky on Telegram.

During the conversation with the US President, Zelensky emphasized the need to strengthen sanctions against Russia in the absence of a trilateral meeting or Moscow’s unwillingness to honestly end the war. The President stressed that sanctions remain one of the most effective tools of international influence.

Position of European Leaders and Security Guarantees for Ukraine

European leaders expressed support for Donald Trump’s efforts to achieve peace. In a joint statement by the leaders of the European Commission, France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Finland, Poland, and the EU Council, it is emphasized that Ukraine must receive reliable security guarantees.

“We clearly understand that Ukraine must have ironclad security guarantees to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the statement emphasizes.

The leaders of the states noted the importance of the US being ready to provide security guarantees to Ukraine. They emphasized that the coalition of allies is prepared to actively participate in the defense of Ukraine, and that there should be no restrictions on the Armed Forces of Ukraine or their cooperation with other countries. Russia, according to the heads of European states, has no veto right over Ukraine’s course towards EU and NATO membership, and decisions regarding the future of Ukraine’s territories should be made exclusively by the Ukrainian side.

The joint statement also emphasizes: “International borders should not be changed by force.”

The leaders highlighted the importance of further cooperation with Trump and Zelensky to hold a trilateral summit with the support of European partners. They reminded that agreements have legal force only after official formalization and confirmed their readiness to facilitate the achievement of sustainable peace for Ukraine.
