Zelensky Calls to Halt Russia’s Oil Trade and Strengthen Sanctions

Зеленський закликав партнерів «продумати», як знищити всю інфраструктуру РФ для торгівлі нафтою

President Volodymyr Zelensky, during the European Political Community summit in Copenhagen, urged international partners to decisively confront Russian oil trade. He emphasized the need for a complete halt to oil exports from Russia, stressing that the financial benefits from this activity contribute to the continuation of Russian military aggression.

Proposals for New Sanctions

In his speech, Zelensky highlighted the importance of the immediate adoption of the 19th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation. He specifically pointed out the necessity of imposing additional restrictions on the captains and crews of vessels belonging to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, as well as on the owners of companies that facilitate the transportation of sanctioned oil. Furthermore, the president suggested considering the possibility of imposing sanctions on Russian oil terminals and fuel infrastructure deep within the aggressor country.

“We also need to seriously think about how to effectively dismantle all Russian oil trade infrastructure, as it fuels their war machine. Right now, we see that Russia continues to use tankers despite the sanctions imposed on them. This must be stopped,” he stated.

Support for the US Call and Hungary’s Reaction

Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of Europe supporting the call from US President Donald Trump to cease the import of Russian oil. He noted that energy resources from the US and other partner countries can fully compensate for the absence of Russian oil in the European market. Zelensky also reached out to the Hungarian government, warning against ignoring the US position on this issue.

Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that his country would continue to purchase oil from Russia, citing a lack of alternative energy sources, despite calls from the US to end such cooperation.
