The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, commented on the recent statement made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Russia, emphasizing its importance for future peace efforts. The head of the Ukrainian state stressed that Ukraine is fulfilling its commitments and continues to fight for significant changes in the situation caused by Russia’s aggression.
Zelensky’s Position on Trump’s Statements
“Ukraine does what it promises. Today, President Trump’s statement is extremely significant. And it is true – it is Russia that is doing everything to disrupt peace efforts and prolong this war. Every night there are strikes, constantly – Russian attempts to hurt Ukraine. Indeed, peace is possible if we act strongly and decisively, and we have repeatedly stated – and all our partners know this – that sanctions are a key element. Russia takes sanctions into account, it considers such losses. Peace through strength is possible,” he said in his video address.
Volodymyr Zelensky also emphasized that Ukraine is ready for the most productive collaboration with the United States to achieve a just and lasting peace.
Deadline for Peace Agreement and Russia’s Reaction
On July 28, Donald Trump outlined a specific deadline he gives to Russian leader Vladimir Putin for reaching a peace agreement with Ukraine – it is 10 or 12 days from the current date. Prior to this, the U.S. President had already shortened the previously set deadline of 50 days, arguing that he is disappointed with Putin’s position and already knows his response to the proposed terms.
The 50-day deadline was set by Trump two weeks ago – on July 14. Moscow’s official position regarding Trump’s proposals remains unchanged. Russian representatives claim to be interested in peace, but exclusively on terms that are viewed in Kyiv as a de facto capitulation. This includes a demand for Ukraine to relinquish part of its territories, even those that Russia currently does not control or has never controlled at all.
