The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, provided detailed information about the funding mechanism for the ten Patriot air defense systems that Ukraine plans to receive from the United States. During a conversation with journalists, the head of state emphasized that Kyiv has already reached agreements regarding the financial participation of several European partners in this process.
Partner Support and Funding for Patriot
Zelensky stated that there is a positive dialogue with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the request for exactly ten Patriot systems and the corresponding volume for them. According to the president, Germany has already agreed to finance two systems, while Norway will take on the funding for another one. Separate bilateral agreements have also been reached with the Prime Minister of Norway.
“We have a positive dialogue with President Trump regarding the Patriot systems – the request for 10 systems and the corresponding volume for these systems. Germany is ready to pay – I have agreements with them – for two systems, Norway for one, and there are bilateral agreements with the Prime Minister,” he said during the conversation with journalists.
The head of state expressed hope that after receiving specific responses from the manufacturer and the U.S. regarding timelines, other European partners will also join in the funding. Zelensky noted that a funding scheme for the Patriot systems has already been developed, and the Ukrainian side has a vision of the sources for initial funding.
International Support and the U.S. Position
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized Washington’s intentions to persuade other NATO countries to participate in the transfer of Patriot systems to Ukraine. Additionally, American media reported that President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of providing Ukraine with another Patriot system as additional assistance.
The need for modern air defense systems for Ukraine has increased due to the rising intensity of Russian air attacks on cities. In recent months, official Kyiv has consistently appealed to Western partners to strengthen the supply of air defense systems. During the concluding press conference of the NATO summit in The Hague last week, Donald Trump confirmed that the U.S. would consider the possibility of selling additional Patriot systems to Ukraine.
