Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared details of his phone call with United States President Donald Trump, which took place on May 8. According to him, during the conversation, the parties exchanged greetings on the occasion of Victory Day over Nazism in Europe. Zelensky noted that during the discussion, they congratulated each other on the ratification by the Verkhovna Rada of an important economic partnership agreement, which he described as “a truly historic document that opens many new opportunities for cooperation.”

In his comments, he added:
“We discussed the need for further efforts towards peace, including specific steps that can be taken. President Trump inquired about the situation on the battlefield, and I briefed him briefly. I also informed him that Ukraine is ready for a 30-day ceasefire starting today. We expect Russia to agree to this proposal.”
Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is ready for negotiations in any format, but for this, Russia must demonstrate serious intentions to end the war, starting with a complete and unconditional ceasefire.

According to Zelensky, Trump confirmed his support and willingness to assist in ending the war, expressing readiness to facilitate and the necessity of a ceasefire. They agreed to maintain further contacts on this issue. At the same time, on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump announced that negotiations with Russia and Ukraine are ongoing and called for the establishment of a 30-day unconditional truce. He stated that if the truce “is not upheld,” the US and its allies will impose additional sanctions.
Earlier, Zelensky’s spokesperson reported that the Ukrainian president was having a phone call with Trump on the same day that the Verkhovna Rada ratified the agreement to create a joint investment fund between Ukraine and the US.
