During his visit to the Sumy region, the head of state noted that this area is an important direction where numerous issues are being addressed. As Zelensky stated, “I personally wanted to be here, I personally wanted to thank our warriors: Airborne Forces – the 80th Brigade, the 82nd Brigade, Naval Infantry – the 36th Brigade, and all those who are carrying out tasks in the Kursk region.” The President emphasized that Ukrainian units have been conducting combat operations on enemy territory since August of last year, which is considered one of Ukraine’s significant achievements during the war.
Discussion of Military Needs
Zelensky highlighted the necessity of providing the military with equipment, drones, and operational resources. In a video address, he said: “Today we spoke with the commanders of our units in this direction – the main needs, additional supplies, equipment provision, drones, operational issues. We are working to protect our positions.” Additionally, the president announced the government’s decision to allocate extra funds to support border communities.
“Next week, officials must resolve this: additional funds – substantial funds – for each such community for the most urgent tasks,” he noted.
Evacuation of Residents and Security Situation
It is worth noting that the Director of the Civil Protection Department, Oleksandr Mylaash, reported the evacuation of 47,500 residents from the border areas of the Sumy region, including 7,635 children. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of airstrikes on the border, as well as active infiltration by Russian reconnaissance and sabotage groups.
Amid the escalating situation, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported that he has been working with the units involved in the defense of the Sumy region. Syrskyi assured that the Defense Forces are managing to maintain a “sanitary zone” in the Kursk region, blocking the enemy’s advance on the northern border of the Sumy region.
