During her visit to Greenland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen urged the United States to strengthen cooperation on security issues in the Arctic. At the same time, she firmly rejected Washington’s proposal regarding the possible annexation of the island.

At a press conference attended by the acting head of the Greenlandic government, Mute Bourupa Egede, and the newly elected head of government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Frederiksen addressed the United States directly in English.
“I would like to take this opportunity to send a message directly to the United States of America. This is not just about Greenland or Denmark; it is about the world order that we have built together across the Atlantic over many generations. You cannot annex another country, even with the argument of security”
, she emphasized.
This statement came shortly after a meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, which took place on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Brussels. According to Rasmussen, Rubio acknowledged Greenland’s right to self-determination, and the US State Department also confirmed the existence of “strong relations” between Washington and Copenhagen.
US President Donald Trump reaffirmed on March 28 his intention to bring Greenland under US control, stating:
“Greenland is necessary for our national and international security”
, he said during a briefing in the Oval Office of the White House.
In response to Trump’s remarks, Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede stated that the island “is not for sale.” Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with its own government and parliament.
