The Dnipro in Kyiv Remains an Untapped Space for Residents and Tourists

Despite its great potential, the Dnipro River in Kyiv remains almost entirely disengaged from urban life. Architect Alina Holovatyuk notes that the Kyiv waterfront could serve as a model for a modern public space; however, today this area is effectively ignored by the city authorities.
Denmark’s Experience as an Example for Kyiv
According to the architect, Denmark can serve as a benchmark for creating creative public spaces by the water. She is convinced that the Dnipro should not only be a place for fishermen but also a zone for relaxation, walking, and hosting public events. Alina Holovatyuk points out that Copenhagen has already implemented numerous floating platforms used for concerts and other events.
“We have virtually no use of the Dnipro. For both city residents and as a public space, as well as for tourism, it is not utilized at all. In our case, this is a waterfront that should be filled with spaces that are interesting for everyone, not just for local fishermen under the bridge,” said Alina Holovatyuk.
Opportunities for Waterfront Development
Holovatyuk believes that with proper attention from the authorities, floating public spaces could be created on the Dnipro, water transport could be organized between the banks, and platforms could be built for hosting large events. This would contribute to the development of tourism and improve the quality of life for Kyiv residents.
As of June 2025, attention to the development of this area of the city remains insufficient. The architect emphasizes that implementing such projects would allow Kyiv to become more comfortable and attractive for residents and visitors to the capital.
