Canada’s Position and Discrepancies at the G7 Summit
Journalists asked Mark Carney about the absence of a separate joint G7 statement on Ukraine following reports of discrepancies in wording between the United States and other countries. Carney emphasized that Canada was prepared to take a stronger stance in support of Ukraine than what was ultimately reflected in the final document.
“There would be things that some of us, including Canada, would have said beyond what was stated in the chair’s summary,” Carney said, as quoted by CBC News. – “But the recognition of the importance of President Trump’s initiative to achieve a durable peace is entirely consistent with our firm commitment to using all options to maximize pressure on Russia, including financial sanctions.”
According to the Prime Minister, all G7 countries remain resolutely committed to applying maximum possible pressure on Russia, particularly through financial sanctions.
Reasons for the Absence of a Joint Statement and Participants’ Reactions
Despite the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the high-level meeting in Kananaskis (Alberta), a joint statement on Ukraine was not adopted. According to a senior government source, the reason for this was discrepancies in wording that were not agreed upon by U.S. representatives. Six out of seven leaders were ready for harsher assessments, but the American side insisted on softening them.
An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained that the U.S. did not agree to include sharp remarks regarding Russia, as they feared a negative impact on the negotiation process with that country regarding the cessation of the war.
According to sources, the evening discussions among the G7 leaders did not convince U.S. President Donald Trump to strengthen sanctions against Russia. At the summit, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the costs incurred by the U.S. due to sanctions and reiterated his objections during a joint dinner.
It is also known that Donald Trump has repeatedly urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire in the war against Ukraine and threatened new sanctions, but has yet to impose them.
