Details of the negotiations in Anchorage

The talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin were conducted in a small group and lasted nearly three hours. The meeting concluded around 1:00 AM Kyiv time on August 16. Initially, the presidents were supposed to meet only in the presence of interpreters, but the format was later changed. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff joined Trump, while Putin was accompanied by aide Yuri Ushakov and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Possibility of a new meeting involving Ukraine

Donald Trump stated ahead of the summit that the main goal of the negotiations in Alaska was to prepare for a future meeting involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to him, this trilateral meeting could take place soon and would be more significant than the current summit.

In response to suggestions regarding a “territory exchange” as part of a potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, Trump said:

“They will discuss it, but I must allow Ukraine to make that decision… I am not here to negotiate for Ukraine. I am here to bring them to the negotiating table.”

At the same time, Trump assessed the likelihood of success in his negotiations with Putin at 25%.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not participate in the negotiations in Anchorage. He has previously emphasized that Ukraine will not “gift its land to anyone,” and the Armed Forces of Ukraine will not leave Donbas voluntarily. Kyiv insists on receiving firm security guarantees in the event of any agreements with Russia.
