Details of the Meeting and Delegation Composition
The meeting, which took place on August 15 before 11:00 PM Kyiv time, aimed, according to the American leader, to find ways to cease hostilities by Russia in Ukraine. Initially, it was planned for the talks to be held one-on-one with only interpreters present. However, the format was changed: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff joined Trump, while Putin was accompanied by his assistant Yuri Ushakov and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
After the negotiations concluded, cameras captured Vladimir Putin leaving the meeting venue accompanied by spokesperson Dmitry Peskov and members of the Russian delegation. Journalists accredited to the summit are awaiting the start of a press conference, but as of the time of this news release, communication with the press has not yet begun.
Discussion on the War in Ukraine and Possible Next Steps
U.S. President Donald Trump stated before the meeting that the main goal of the summit in Alaska is to lay the groundwork for a possible second meeting. Trump noted that the option of holding negotiations with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is being considered, which, in his opinion, could be even more significant than the current summit with Putin.
“They will discuss it, but I have to allow Ukraine to make that decision… I’m not here to negotiate for Ukraine. I’m here to get them to the negotiating table.”
Trump also assesses the likelihood of failure for the meeting with Putin at 25%. During the flight to Alaska, in response to a question about a possible “territorial exchange” as part of agreements to end the war in Ukraine, he emphasized that the final decision must be made by Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is not participating in the negotiations in Alaska. He previously stated that Ukraine is not going to “give away its land to anyone,” and the Armed Forces will not leave Donbas on their own. Official Kyiv insists on firm security guarantees in the event of any agreements with Russia.
