Crayfish Fishing Banned in Kyiv and Region Until September 2025

The Department of the State Agency for Melioration, Fisheries, and Food Programs in Kyiv and the region has announced a complete ban on crayfish fishing in the area.

Reasons and Duration of the Ban

From now on, crayfish fishing is prohibited in all rivers and water bodies of Kyiv and Kyiv region. This decision has been made based on scientific and biological justification and in agreement with the Institute of Fisheries, Marine Ecology, and Oceanography. The ban will be in effect until September 30, 2025. The purpose of this restriction is to preserve and protect the crayfish population during the molting period, as well as to create favorable conditions for breeding and increasing their stocks in the water bodies.

Any crayfish fishing in the rivers and water bodies of the region is prohibited. This ban has been implemented based on scientific and biological justification and in coordination with the Institute of Fisheries, Marine Ecology, and Oceanography. The prohibition will last until September 30, 2025. It is explained that this is done to preserve and protect the crayfish population during the molting period and to create favorable conditions for carrying eggs and increasing their stocks in the water bodies.

Responsibility for Violations

Violations of the established Fishing Rules entail administrative, criminal, and civil liability. Offenders may face fines, with damages calculated at 3,332 hryvnias for each caught crayfish according to the approved rates, as well as confiscation of fishing gear.

After the ban expires, according to information from the Kyiv Fish Protection Patrol, one person will be allowed to catch no more than 30 crayfish per day, adhering to the minimum size limits.

For reference: the lifespan of river crayfish is between 15 to 20 years.
