Military and Financial Support for Ukraine
During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 summit in Kananskis, Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that in addition to military aid, Ukraine will receive a new loan tranche of over $2 billion. These funds are based on frozen Russian assets and are intended to support the Ukrainian economy and defense needs.
“We are providing additional military assistance – drones, helicopters, and other types of weapons – amounting to over $2 billion in aid directly to Ukraine. Furthermore, we are distributing the next tranche of the loan, based on frozen Russian assets, also exceeding $2 billion. This is our contribution,” said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 summit in Kananskis, Canada.
New Sanctions Against Russia and the ‘Shadow Fleet’
Canada is also implementing restrictive measures against more than 40 legal entities from Russia and other countries that are believed to be attempting to evade existing sanctions. In addition, over 200 vessels from the so-called ‘shadow fleet,’ which are used to circumvent restrictions on the export of Russian oil and other goods, are also being sanctioned.
The Prime Minister emphasized that support for Ukraine will remain unwavering until a just peace is achieved for the Ukrainian people.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Kananskis for the G7 summit on June 17. According to Ukrainian media sources at the summit, his participation in a special leaders’ session under the slogan “A strong and sovereign Ukraine” is anticipated.
The day before, on June 16, during his visit to Austria, Volodymyr Zelensky announced a planned meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, during which he intended to discuss arms procurement for Ukraine. However, Trump left the summit early to return to Washington due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
