During a meeting with the European Union’s chief diplomat, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that Beijing cannot agree to Russia’s defeat in the war against Ukraine. According to an informed official, such a defeat for the Russian Federation could allow the United States to focus all its efforts on China.

Negotiations Between China and the EU in Brussels

This candid statement was made during Wang Yi’s four-hour meeting with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, which took place in Brussels. The negotiations, according to participants, were held in a tense yet respectful atmosphere and covered a range of issues, including cybersecurity, rare earth elements, trade imbalances, Taiwan, and the situation in the Middle East.

Beijing’s Geopolitical Interests and Official Position

According to a senior official, Wang Yi’s private remarks indicate that Beijing is interested in prolonging the war in Ukraine, as this prevents the U.S. from fully concentrating on its rivalry with China. This position aligns with assessments from critics of China’s policy, who believe that Beijing’s real interests in the conflict differ significantly from its stated neutral position.

“China is not a party to the Ukrainian issue. China’s position on the Ukrainian crisis is objective and consistent – negotiations, a ceasefire, and peace. A prolonged crisis in Ukraine does not serve anyone’s interests,” she said, adding that Beijing wants a swift political resolution.

Despite such private comments, Beijing’s official position, articulated by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, remains unchanged: China advocates for a political resolution, calls for negotiations, and does not consider itself a party to the conflict.
