The Honorary Chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Michael McCaul, representing the Republican Party, has urged President Donald Trump’s administration to urgently resume arms supplies to Ukraine. He emphasized that this decision is necessary to support the defense capabilities of our state amid the ongoing aggression from the Russian Federation.
McCaul’s Position on Arms Supplies
McCaul stressed that, according to American military assessments, providing Ukraine with critically important weapons will not harm the combat readiness of the U.S. Army itself. He called on the administration not to delay the resumption of supplies. Additionally, the congressman noted that the suspension of assistance from the Pentagon only weakens President Trump’s peace efforts.
“High-ranking American military officials have concluded that providing this critically important weaponry to Ukraine will not jeopardize the readiness of the U.S. military, so I urge the administration to restore the supply process as soon as possible”
McCaul also sharply criticized the actions of the Russian Federation, stating that the nighttime massive missile strike on Ukraine confirms Vladimir Putin’s status as a war criminal and murderer. In his opinion, the attack immediately following Putin’s phone call with Trump is a manifestation of contempt for the U.S. president’s desire to establish peace.
Western Reaction and the Situation with Arms Supplies
Recently, it was announced in the U.S. that part of the arms supplies to Ukraine would be temporarily suspended due to concerns about depleting the strategic reserves of the U.S. Army. Washington has not disclosed which specific systems are currently unavailable. However, media reports indicate that dozens of interceptors for the Patriot systems, portable Stinger anti-aircraft missile systems, precision artillery munitions, over 100 Hellfire missiles, and AIM missiles are among those restricted.
This decision has caused significant resonance in European circles. Bloomberg reported that European officials were “stunned” by the U.S. decision. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte emphasized that Ukraine will not be able to cope without the support of partners, including the U.S., in the near future. He stated that while America must take care of its own reserves, it is important to maintain a balance in assisting allies. Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also expressed regret over Washington’s decision, noting that supporting Ukraine is vital for Poland.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin traditionally claimed that reducing arms supplies to Ukraine would allegedly accelerate the completion of the so-called “special military operation” – the official term used in the Russian Federation to refer to the war against Ukraine.
In light of the intensification of Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, Kyiv continues to appeal to Western allies for increased supplies of air defense systems. During a press conference following last week’s NATO summit in The Hague, President Donald Trump stated that the U.S. is considering providing Ukraine with additional Patriot systems.
