German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes there is a clear connection between the phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump that took place on Thursday and the subsequent massive airstrikes on Ukrainian territory. This was reported by the official representative of the German government, Stefan Cornelius.
German Government Statements on Attacks on Ukraine
The government representative in Berlin emphasized that Merz has repeatedly pointed out a certain pattern in the actions of the Russian leadership. According to him, the phone calls made by Vladimir Putin are often accompanied by intensified strikes on Ukraine.
“The Chancellor has noted several times in recent days that there is a pattern with the Russian president, and that phone calls are generally followed by even harsher strikes,” said the government representative Stefan Cornelius in Berlin, as quoted by the DPA agency.
Cornelius added that the nighttime attack from Russia only reinforced this belief.
Massive Strikes Following the Conversation Between Putin and Trump
After the phone call between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, the Russian Federation launched a powerful attack on Ukraine. According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia used over 500 drones and missiles, directing the main strike at Kyiv. Local authorities reported that one person died in the capital, and another 26 were injured.
It is also known that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had a separate phone conversation with Trump. During their discussion, he raised the issue of Germany’s initiative to supply Ukraine with Patriot air defense missile systems. The talks took place against the backdrop of a temporary suspension of some American military supplies to Ukraine and a new wave of attacks from Russia on Kyiv.
