US Considers Changing Approach to Russia After Alaska Talks

США «змінять позицію», якщо виявиться, що зустріч на Алясці не дала результатів

US President Donald Trump stated that the United States may reconsider its strategy regarding Russia if it becomes clear that the meeting with President Putin in Alaska did not yield the expected results. Trump made this announcement on September 2 during a press conference at the White House, dedicated to the issue of relocating the US Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Alabama.

International Relations and the US Position

In response to a question about the upcoming military parade in Beijing, to which the President of Russia has been invited, Trump emphasized that he is not concerned about the deepening cooperation between Russia and China. He highlighted the importance of relations with China, noting that the United States has a good relationship with President Xi Jinping and that China needs the US more than vice versa.

“China needs us; we have a very good relationship with President Xi. China needs us more than we need them.”

The US President also recalled the recent meeting with the President of Russia in Alaska in August, calling it “very good.” At the same time, he noted that the further development of relations depends on the outcomes of this meeting, and if no progress is made, the US is prepared to change its position. However, Trump did not go into details regarding possible steps.

Prospects for Sanctions and Organizing Negotiations

During the same press conference, Donald Trump expressed his readiness to take action against Russia if no progress is made in organizing a meeting between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on August 31 Ukraine’s readiness for high-level negotiations with Russia, but noted that Russia is “investing in further war.” Trump, for his part, expressed hope for a “very quick” end to the war but did not specify any timelines.

Additionally, the US President emphasized that he would consider the possibility of imposing new economic sanctions against Russia if there is no willingness for peace from President Putin.
