The Bubnov Baths Building: Value and History
This refers to an architectural monument from the 19th century — the so-called “Bubnov Merchant Baths Building.” This site holds significant architectural and historical importance for Kyiv. It was constructed in the early 19th century, when, after a major fire in Podil in 1822, merchant of the third guild Mykhailo Bubnov acquired the land and built a mansion with public baths on it.
The building is a striking example of classical architecture that has preserved its authenticity to this day. It reflects the trends in the development of Kyiv’s architecture during that period and possesses exceptional cultural value.
Protection of Cultural Heritage and the Condition of the Building
The court sided with the preservation of cultural heritage, and now the building will remain under state protection. This guarantees its continued safeguarding under current legislation.
“The building is an example of architecture in classical forms, which has preserved its authenticity to this day and reflects the development of Kyiv architecture in the 19th century. Furthermore, the mansion is a rare example of structures and holds historical significance as an object connected to the history of national minorities and the spiritual development of the Jewish community in Kyiv.”
At the same time, the owner of the building has long avoided signing a protection agreement, depriving it of legislative guarantees for protection. Currently, the structure is in an emergency state, and the owner has already begun dismantling the roof, raising concerns among specialists and the public. However, the court’s decision strengthens the state’s position in preserving this unique monument.
