Significance of the Crimean Tatar Flag
During the ceremonial event, Olga Kurishko emphasized the symbolic significance of the Crimean Tatar flag, highlighting that it embodies freedom, the right to dignity, a homeland, and the opportunity to live one’s own life. Refat Chubarov, who was present, noted that this flag has become a symbol of the inseparability of the Crimean Tatars from Crimea and Crimea from Ukraine, not only in Ukrainian society but also in the world.
“The Crimean Tatar flag represents freedom; it signifies one’s right to dignity, the right to one’s home, and the right to live one’s life as one wishes,” Kurishko stated during her speech.
History and Present of the Crimean Tatar Flag
Prior to the ceremony at St. Michael’s Square, the Crimean Tatar flag was also raised near the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. The flag, which features a golden tamga on a blue background, was approved by the First Kurultai of the Crimean Tatar people back in 1917. Since 2010, Ukraine has celebrated Crimean Tatar Flag Day. This tradition, which originated in Crimea, is now actively supported on the mainland of the country.
After the onset of Russian aggression in 2014, the Crimean Tatar flag in Crimea itself transformed into a powerful symbol of resistance and a means of expressing the identity of the Crimean Tatars, who continue to fight for their rights and freedom.
