Cyprus President Emphasizes the Need to Uphold Ukraine’s Sovereignty in Peace Agreement

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized that any peace agreement regarding the resolution of the situation in Ukraine must be based on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state. He made this statement during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.

Support for Ukraine and European Security

Christodoulides stressed that initiatives aimed at peace should contribute to the advancement of “effective and substantial” support for Ukraine, including from the European Union Council. He also highlighted that Ukraine’s security is an integral part of the security of the entire European Union.

“We emphasized our clear position that the peace agreement must be based on the principles of the United Nations Charter and on full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. At the same time, I stressed that peace efforts should help advance effective and substantial support for Ukraine, as well as effective support from the European Union Council,” he said during the press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.

Visit to Ukraine and Cyprus’s Future Role

The President of Cyprus assured that his country will continue to provide assistance to Ukraine, especially on its path to EU membership. Christodoulides emphasized that Cyprus will do everything possible to support Ukraine’s aspirations in the European direction.

The official visit of Nikos Christodoulides to Ukraine took place on December 4. During his stay in Kyiv, he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk. This visit comes ahead of Cyprus’s preparations for its presidency in the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026.
