The United States has decided to postpone the delivery of Patriot air defense missile systems to Switzerland, focusing instead on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense. This was reported by the Swiss Ministry of Defense on July 17.
Ukraine Becomes a Priority for Patriot Deliveries
According to the Swiss military office, the US has officially stated that the priority remains the delivery of Patriot systems to support Ukraine. This means that Switzerland will receive its systems later than previously planned.
“The US Department of Defense has informed that the priority will be the delivery of Patriot systems to support Ukraine… This also affects Switzerland, which will receive its shipments later than planned.”
Delivery Timelines for Patriot Systems to Switzerland Changed
Switzerland ordered five Patriot systems from the US back in 2022. According to the initial plan, deliveries were set to begin in 2026 and conclude in 2028. However, on July 16, the Pentagon officially informed the Swiss Ministry of Defense about the delay in deliveries.
Furthermore, the office noted that last year the US had warned Switzerland about potential changes to the timelines for the PAC-3 MSE missile version intended for the Patriot system. The reason for these changes is also the need for urgent support for Ukraine with modern air defense capabilities.
