The capital football club Dynamo, the reigning champion of Ukraine, has prematurely ended its quest for a spot in the group stage of the Champions League for the 2025/2026 season. In the third qualifying round, the Kyiv team lost to Cypriot Paphos for the second time, with a score of 0:2 in the first match and 0:3 in the return leg.
Defensive Mistakes and Missed Opportunities
Already in the second minute of the return match, Paphos opened the scoring: a mistake by goalkeeper Ruslan Neshcheret and the Dynamo defenders in their own penalty area led to a quick goal. In the 10th minute, the Kyiv team had a chance to equalize — team captain Vitaliy Buyalsky received the ball in the opponent’s penalty area, but his shot was blocked by a defender from Cyprus.
The second half of the match brought another goal for Dynamo’s opponents. In the 55th minute, Mislav Orsic, the scorer of the first goal, made a cross into the penalty area of the Kyiv team, which ended with a successful shot from defender João Correa. This goal doubled Paphos’s lead and definitively eliminated the Ukrainian team’s chances of continuing in the Champions League.
Future Prospects and Coach’s Assessment
After being eliminated from the Champions League, Dynamo will continue its European campaign in the Europa League qualifiers. The next opponent for the Kyiv team will be the winner of the match between Maltese club Hamrun Spartans and Israeli Maccabi from Tel Aviv, which also dropped to the Europa League after losing to Paphos.
“We can strengthen any position. If we talk about the team, we need to consider that it consists of players from our academy and Ukrainian performers. To play at the highest level, we need to significantly strengthen. Because we are lacking both individually and in team actions. And this was evident today,” said Shovkovskyi.
The head coach of Dynamo, Oleksandr Shovkovskyi, commented on the game, noting the need for substantial reinforcement of the squad to enhance the team’s competitiveness at the international level.
