Escalating Pressure on Russia Through Sanctions and Diplomatic Actions

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized during talks in Istanbul that the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin from the negotiations is indicative of his unwillingness to pursue peace and his tendency to stall. He stated:

“It is very important that we have complete unity with our allies today to make it clear that there must be a ceasefire. But also, that if there is not, we will act together on sanctions.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reminded that the Russian president called for a ceasefire on May 9, but he himself ignored it. She highlighted that “Putin ultimately proposed a direct meeting between Ukraine and Russia in Turkey”, but Ukrainian President Zelensky was ready for negotiations, while the Russian leader disregarded this. According to her, this confirms Russia’s true intentions.

The head of the European Commission also reported that the EU is intensifying sanctions pressure, particularly against the “Nord Stream-1” and “Nord Stream-2,” as well as imposing restrictions on additional shadow fleet vessels and lowering the price cap on oil. She emphasized:

“Because we want peace and must increase pressure until President Putin is ready (for peace)”

The Future of the Summit and Key Agenda Issues

On May 16, leaders from across Europe gathered at Skanderbeg Square in the center of Tirana to participate in the summit of the European Political Community. Key agenda issues include security and democratic resilience in Europe, with a particular focus on Russian aggression against Ukraine, which raises significant concern among participants.
