Restrictions on Information Transparency and the Goals of This Policy
“The German government will significantly reduce communication regarding the supply of (to Ukraine – ed.) weapon systems in the future,” the publication Tagesspiegel quotes an internal source. The interlocutor notes that this strategy is aimed at “taking away the military advantage from the aggressor in the war in Ukraine.” This is explained by the fact that public discussions of arms supplies may assist Russia in planning and responding to military actions.
“The goal is to reduce Russia’s ability to obtain information about our supplies and tactics.”
Previously, all data regarding military aid to Ukraine from Germany was published on the official government website, but this practice will now change.
Scope and Prospects of Military Aid
Germany regularly provides Ukraine with significant packages of military aid, amounting to billions of euros. According to the results of the April meeting of the Contact Group in the “Ramstein” format, the country is set to deliver 4 IRIS-T air defense systems and 300 interceptors to Ukraine by 2025. Additionally, there are plans to add 30 missiles for the Patriot systems, 15 Leopard-1 tanks, 25 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, and another 100,000 artillery shells. The total amount of aid by 2029 is projected to be 11 billion euros.
Unlike the previous government led by Olaf Scholz, which refrained from providing Ukraine with Taurus missiles capable of striking targets within Russia, the new coalition sees a growing number of supporters for supplying such weapons to Kyiv. This indicates an increase in Germany’s support for Ukraine in its struggle for independence and security.
