Ukraine’s Position and Partners’ Reaction
The Ukrainian side is actively cooperating with European partners and the United States to intensify diplomatic efforts. Zelensky noted that he is in constant contact with everyone who can strengthen diplomatic pressure on Russia so that the process does not remain a formality.
“In fact, we are in touch every day with everyone who can make diplomacy meaningful. As of now, there is no clear information on what the Russians are bringing to Istanbul. We don’t have it, Turkey doesn’t have it, the United States doesn’t have it, and neither do other partners. And for now, it doesn’t look very serious,” he said in his video address.
The president expressed hope that the United States would take a decisive stance regarding sanctions against Russia, which would contribute to achieving peace. Zelensky emphasized the need for a ceasefire and urged Russia to stop imitating the diplomatic process.
The Situation Surrounding the Negotiations in Istanbul
On May 28, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov proposed to hold the second round of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul on June 2. According to him, the Russian delegation intends to present a memorandum regarding a peace agreement prepared by Russian President’s aide Vladimir Medinsky.
At the same time, the Kremlin refused to preliminarily share its conditions with Ukraine ahead of the upcoming negotiations, which provoked a negative reaction in Kyiv. Zelensky emphasized that such behavior indicates the Russian side’s desire to make the negotiations “meaningless.” Ukraine, for its part, confirmed its readiness for dialogue but insists on thorough preparation for the negotiations.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on May 28 that he would be able to respond regarding Vladimir Putin’s real intentions concerning the end of the war in Ukraine only in two weeks. He added that, in his opinion, Russia “wants to do something,” but a specific response is only possible after signing the relevant agreement.
