The official regime in North Korea has for the first time confirmed the involvement of its troops in the war on the side of Russia against Ukraine. According to Pyongyang, it has sent its contingent for “assistance,” as it has a corresponding agreement with Moscow. This announcement has provoked a sharp reaction from the international community, particularly from the United States and South Korea.

According to Yonhap news agency, American officials have urged Pyongyang to cease the deployment of troops in Russia and demand that Moscow refrain from any support for the DPRK regime. In a statement from the State Department, it was noted:
“Third countries, such as the DPRK, that contribute to prolonging the war between Russia and Ukraine bear responsibility for this… We remain concerned about the direct involvement of the DPRK in the war. The deployment of DPRK military units in Russia and any support that the RF provides to the DPRK in response must stop”.
At the same time, the South Korean government condemns the official acknowledgment by the regime of the participation of North Korean troops in the Russo-Ukrainian war. In a statement from the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is emphasized that “the public acknowledgment of the deployment of troops and the claim of their compliance with international law” is a mockery of the international community. The authorities of the country stress that the sending of DPRK troops to war and extensive military cooperation with Russia is a violation of international norms, including the UN Charter and UN Security Council resolutions.
Calls to Cease Military Cooperation
Seoul has called on Moscow and Pyongyang to urgently stop the illegal military cooperation that undermines peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
