Underground passages in the capital are used as shelters

Residents of Kyiv have appealed to the city authorities, urging them to urgently improve the condition of underground passages, which serve as shelters for the population during air alerts. Citizens emphasize the need to ensure safe and comfortable conditions in these facilities in case of threats.
Electronic Petition to the Kyiv City Council
The relevant electronic petition has been posted on the official resource of the Kyiv City Council. The authors of the initiative propose to install entrance doors in all underground passages or at least in those that are most frequently used as shelters during air strikes by the Russian Federation. According to the signatories, this would protect people from wind, dust, precipitation, and provide a more comfortable temperature indoors during the cold season.
Proposals for Infrastructure Improvement
In addition to installing doors, the petition initiators are calling for equipping underground passages with sockets or USB ports for charging mobile devices. Power for these is proposed to be supplied both from the central power grid and through backup energy sources — solar panels, generators, or batteries. In the opinion of Kyiv residents, this would ensure communication during prolonged stays in shelters.
“Kyiv already has examples of successful shelter arrangements (for instance, underground metro stations), so the experience and technical base are available,” emphasized the residents of Kyiv.
