Residents of Kyiv are advocating for the restoration of the original appearance of the facades of the capital’s historical buildings

In Kyiv, public discontent is growing regarding the condition of the facades of old buildings in the city’s central areas. Residents are urging the city authorities to dismantle air conditioners, satellite dishes, and glazing that have cluttered the walls and balconies of historical structures. They insist on returning the buildings to their original appearance to preserve the city’s architectural heritage.
Petition in Support of Kyiv’s Authenticity
An electronic petition has been registered on the official website of the Kyiv City Council, in which residents are asking the authorities to address the situation. The authors of the initiative note that Kyiv is one of the most beautiful cities in Eastern Europe, yet the current appearance of the facades of historical buildings leaves much to be desired. They are convinced that local authorities are ignoring the preservation of cultural heritage by allowing homeowners to install additional structures that distort the facades.
The Problem of Illegal Glazing and Structures
The text of the petition emphasizes that in many cities in Ukraine and Europe, glazing balconies in old buildings has long been prohibited. However, in Kyiv, according to the signatories, almost every second building in the center has glazed balconies. Such structures, along with air conditioners and satellite dishes, are considered “garbage on the facades” by the initiative’s authors.
Such garbage on the facades, the petition signatories are convinced, is a substitution of the authentic appearances of the buildings and should be dismantled.
The public hopes that the authorities will pay attention to their demand and begin the dismantling of unnecessary structures, restoring the historical buildings of Kyiv to their original appearance.
