Researchers in Kyiv have created a three-dimensional model of the first bell tower of St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery. According to the scientists, the bell tower was wooden until the early 18th century.

Historical Plans and Features of the Bell Tower

Experts state that the oldest depiction of this structure is found on a plan of Kyiv drawn up by Ivan Ushakov in 1695, although the bell tower is only sketched schematically on it. A more detailed representation is available on a city plan from 1688, which allowed modern researchers to recreate the appearance of the historical building more accurately.

“The original brick bell tower was built between 1716 and 1720, and before it stood a wooden one. We see it on Ivan Ushakov’s plan of Kyiv from 1695, but it is poorly depicted there, one might say, — conditionally. However, on the 1688 plan, the depiction is very detailed,” the statement reads.

Researchers suggest that it was thanks to the detailed plan from 1688 that the renowned architect Petro Yurchenko carried out the reconstruction of the bell tower.

Similarity Between the Brick and Wooden Structures

The new brick bell tower, built at the initiative of Archbishop Varlaam (Lenytsky) and likely by master Ivan Matviyevych, shares similar features with its wooden predecessor. Both structures have comparable proportions and architectural characteristics, emphasizing the continuity and respect for the historical traditions of the monastery.
