In Kyiv, residents are actively collecting signatures for a petition demanding that the city authorities restore the house of Yakov Greter. This is one of the few historical buildings in the Shulyavka district that was almost completely destroyed as a result of a missile strike by the Russian Federation that occurred on the night of June 5 to 6, 2025.

The Greter House: An Important Part of Kyiv’s Cultural Heritage

The online petition is posted on the official Kyiv City Council portal. The authors of the initiative emphasize that the loss of this building is a significant blow to the cultural heritage of the capital. The house, built in 1890, belonged to Yakov Greter – a co-founder of the Kyiv Foundry and Mechanical Plant. This enterprise became one of the leaders of Ukraine’s industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, producing steam engines and equipment for the sugar industry, as well as servicing the leading enterprises of Kyiv’s patrons, the Tereshchenkos and the Symyrenkos.

“The historical value of this building is undeniable: built in 1890, the house belonged to Yakov Greter, co-founder of the Kyiv Foundry and Mechanical Plant. This plant became a flagship of Ukrainian industry: it produced steam engines and equipment for the sugar industry, servicing the enterprises of well-known Kyiv patrons, the Tereshchenkos and the Symyrenkos at that time.”

Historical Significance and Residents’ Demands

The petition signers also emphasize that in 1919, the legendary armored train “Free Ukraine” was created at Greter’s plant for the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen. Subsequently, the building was included in the State Register of Monuments, confirming its significance for the city’s history.

Capital residents insist on the urgent implementation of emergency and conservation works, as well as the development of a restoration project and the full reconstruction of this unique monument.
