A White-Black Flag Raised Above Kyiv’s Central Station in Support of Captives

Над Центральним залізничним вокзалом підняли біло-чорний прапор: що це означає

Kyiv railway workers have joined a nationwide campaign in support of Ukrainian captives and the missing.

This is reported by Kyiv24

A white-black flag was ceremoniously raised above the Central Railway Station of the capital. This symbolic gesture is intended to remind us of the Ukrainians who are held captive by the Russian Federation, as well as those who have gone missing as a result of the war.

Symbolism and Scale of the Initiative

White-black flags are flying not only above the Kyiv station but also over dozens of other railway stations across Ukraine. As explained by Ukrzaliznytsia, this campaign became possible thanks to a partnership with the charitable foundation “Steel”.

“Today we raise the Flag of Hope to remind everyone: we will not stop until every captive and every missing person returns home. It consists of white and black stripes. The black represents death, captivity, and loss. The white symbolizes hope and the relentless struggle for our people. Together, these colors merge into a single canvas—a symbol of the unyielding fight for every Ukrainian who is not yet home,” said the founder of the foundation, Hero of Ukraine Serhiy Volynskyi.

According to him, the white-black flags will remain on buildings until all captives return home.

The Situation with Railway Workers and a Call for Unity

Currently, forty Ukrainian railway workers are held captive in the Russian Federation, while about four hundred are considered missing.

The Chairman of the Board of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” Oleksandr Pertzovsky called on all organizations, regardless of ownership, to join the campaign and raise the white-black flag as a sign of support for the captives.

“We believe that each of them, every Ukrainian, will return home. We want to give this initiative a boost—whether it’s a private business or a state institution—to raise the white-black flag in support of all captives. Today, such flags are flying over a hundred of our stations. And we want them to number in the thousands. Then, one day, on a happy and sunny day, we will be able to lower them. Because everyone will return,” explained the Chairman of the Board of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” Oleksandr Pertzovsky.
