Petition to Change the Status of the Main Square
An electronic petition has appeared on the official Kyiv City Council website, proposing to grant Independence Square the status of “National Memorial Site” at the city level. According to the initiators, today the main square of the country serves as a public memorial where families of the fallen from all over Ukraine bring flags with the names of their loved ones. The square also commemorates the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred and symbolizes the struggle for the independence of the state.
However, as noted by the residents of Kyiv, the official status of this area currently does not impose restrictions on holding entertainment events, which may not align with the dignified commemoration of the fallen.
Initiatives to Change Event Regulations
The signatories of the petition propose to completely ban any entertainment, concert, and fair events at Independence Square and the Alley of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred. They also urge the authorities to make appropriate changes to the rules for urban development and event organization in the capital.
The public is particularly focused on the need to create a permanent Memorial to the Heroes of Ukraine at Independence Square. In the opinion of the residents, its architectural concept should harmoniously integrate the existing public project — the installation of flags — into a unified memorial ensemble that emphasizes the significance of the site in the country’s history.
“Independence Square should become a place for only official memorial events, religious services, and peaceful gatherings without any entertainment undertones,” the residents of Kyiv are convinced.
