Life and Work of Volodymyr Vynnychenko
Volodymyr Vynnychenko is one of the brightest representatives of Ukrainian literature, as well as a well-known political and public figure. For over fifty years, his name remained under ideological ban in Ukraine: his works were removed from libraries, productions of his plays were not allowed in theaters, and the writer himself was forced to emigrate. The last quarter of his life was spent in the French town of Mougins near Cannes, where he continued to engage in literary creativity and painting, never giving up his dreams of returning to his homeland.
Vynnychenko is one of the most famous Ukrainian writers, an artist, and a prominent political and public figure. For over fifty years, his name was under ideological ban in his homeland, books were destroyed, and plays were not allowed on theater stages. Neither deserved fame nor popularity among readers saved his work from prohibition in Ukraine, and he himself emigrated abroad. He spent the last twenty-five years living in the French town of Mougins near Cannes, where he engaged in literary creativity and painting. He died there, never returning to his native Ukraine, which he dreamed of for many years, as stated on the museum’s Facebook page.
Exhibition Display and Unique Exhibits
The exhibition has been organized through the joint efforts of the National Museum of Literature of Ukraine and the Ivan Fedorov Book Chamber of Ukraine. The exhibition deeply reveals Vynnychenko’s multifaceted talent, showcasing numerous unique and rare exhibits that belong to his creative legacy. Among the presented materials are the first editions of his short works, which received favorable reviews from Ivan Franko and Lesya Ukrainka, as well as the first Ukrainian socio-utopian novel “The Solar Machine.”
Visitors can familiarize themselves with multi-volume editions of the “Book Society” and “Movement,” a series of intellectual novels, as well as with the originals of some of Vynnychenko’s works. Special attention is drawn to the display of his famous work “Revival of the Nation” and a photograph capturing the moment of the proclamation of the IV Universal of the Ukrainian Central Rada.
The exhibition not only introduces visitors to the literary heritage of Volodymyr Vynnychenko but also emphasizes his significant contribution to the formation of the national idea and the independence of Ukraine.
